A few posts ago, I talked about some issues with TikTok, like censorship in comments, poor ad filtering, and algorithm rabbit holes. But guess what? Even more problems with TikTok moderation have popped up since then, and it’s only been a month!
Exploiting Moderation Loopholes
The most frustrating thing is how some users can totally avoid TikTok’s moderation bots. By using a specific set of characters at the beginning and end of their comments, they can post swears and offensive language without any consequences. It’s like they’ve found the cheat code to TikTok’s moderation system! This loophole lets harmful content slip through the cracks, making the platform less safe and enjoyable for everyone. I can’t even go to the comment section without being bombarded with toxicity!

Inadequate Response to Sexual Content
Another big issue is the presence of sexual content in the comments. Even though TikTok’s policies prohibit it, I’ve seen comments containing explicit images and GIFs that stay up even after being reported. After reporting it, TikTok often responds with “no violations found,” which is just annoying. TikTok’s moderation team is playing hide-and-seek with inappropriate content, and they’re bad at finding it. This lack of effective moderation makes the platform unsafe, especially for minors.

Ignoring AI Misuse
TikTok’s Terms of Service also prohibit the use of AI to mislead people or impersonate government or news agencies. But they take no action against it even after it’s been reported. For example, recently I stumbled upon a post that impersonated a Polish news agency and tried to extort users’ personal data. I reported it immediately and provided them with some context. And their response was the typical “No violation found.” This allows misinformation to spread unchecked, which can lead to many bad things, like data theft or even scamming people for money.
Conclusion
It’s clear that TikTok’s moderation system has some serious problems that need to be fixed. From loopholes that let offensive and explicit language through to inadequate responses to sexual content and AI misuse. These issues compromise the safety of the platform. While TikTok is still a popular and entertaining social media site, it’s crucial for the company to take these concerns seriously and work towards improving its moderation. Only then can TikTok provide a truly safe and enjoyable experience for all its users.
