Whenever I discuss this topic, I encounter different opinions. Some people prefer Spotify as the classic option and can’t imagine switching to another platform, believing it’s superior to Google’s alternative. However, I have a different perspective, and from what I see, more and more people around me are beginning to share it.
Why do I think YouTube Premium is better? There are several reasons behind this. Not everyone has to agree, but this is my opinion.
Slightly Higher Price, Much Better Benefits
Let’s start by comparing price versus benefits. Surprisingly, Spotify is the more budget-friendly option, being $2 cheaper. But is it really worth saving such a small amount? I don’t think so.
For $9.99, Spotify Premium offers benefits like ad-free listening, downloading music, and unlimited skipping. However, I believe these last two features should be available even in the free version. After all, forcing users to listen to songs they dislike doesn’t make sense. Meanwhile, YouTube already provides this for free!
Moreover, Spotify only offers commercial music. This means you won’t find many fan-made covers that people love. And let’s not forget—Spotify is only for music and podcasts, many of which are also available for free on YouTube.
So why do I think YouTube Premium is more worth it? Google’s subscription, for $11.99, removes ads, allows music downloads, and enables background play—even with the screen off. This is a feature many people complain about on YouTube, but I find it quite appealing. Google designed its Premium subscription to cover not only music and podcasts but also an entire library of YouTube videos. For just $2 more, you get access to far more content and benefits compared to Spotify.
In summary: YouTube Premium offers significantly more content and better benefits for just a slightly higher price.
Album and Song Release Dates
Many people claim that new releases appear on Spotify faster. While this was true one or two years ago, things have changed. YouTube Music has gained popularity, and artists now release their songs simultaneously across all platforms, including YouTube.
Audio Quality
This part might be controversial because it’s highly subjective. Many of you probably know that Spotify Premium offers higher bitrate audio. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean better quality.
YouTube Music, despite its lower bitrate, actually delivers better sound quality. How? Thanks to Google’s advancements in audio codecs. YouTube uses the Opus codec, making its sound louder, clearer, and more detailed while also improving data transmission.
Conclusion
I understand that many of you may disagree with my opinion, but as stated in the title, this is my subjective view. I believe Google’s subscription offers more content in better quality for a minimal price difference. Convenience is key in today’s world, and if a single subscription provides unlimited access to both music and videos, why not take advantage of it?
